The Five Best Online Quilting Fabric Shops
We all enjoy browsing our local quilting shops, but sometimes there is nothing wrong with buying fabric and quilting supplies online. Perhaps you don’t have a good local shop nearby. Or, perhaps they don’t stock the tools, brands, or styles of fabric that you like. And, let’s admit one glaring issue with most local fabric shops…price. Ugh, yes, I said it. Though I am all for supporting local businesses, sometimes the prices are too high. I will still frequent these shops, and will definitely buy from them or attend their classes or retreats. But most of the time, I do prefer shopping online and snagging some amazing deals. Here’s my top picks for the five best online quilting fabric shops (in the US).
Missouri Star Quilt Co.
Unless you’ve been hiding under a rock, and never watch YouTube, you’ve most likely heard of this company based in Hamilton, MO. Their origin story is pretty inspiring, and they have truly revolutionized the quilting industry.
The reason why they are my first pick for the five best online quilting fabric shop is their SALES. Sign up for their email list, and you will get discount codes, and their Quilter’s Daily Deal. They simply have the best sales, and I often find jelly rolls and layer cakes for $25 or less. They also have a huge selection of tools and notions, some of which are made exclusively for them. Their rulers are a bright green/yellow acrylic, and they are my FAVORITE rulers as far as being able to clearly read the markings. These are often on sale, as well.
One note about this company that you need to bear in mind: SHIPPING IS SLOW. It usually takes almost two weeks for an order to arrive. But this something that I don’t think you can complain about when the prices are so good. I’ve seen bad reviews on their site, mostly due to the shipping time. To me, this just isn’t an issue. I have plenty of things to work on in the meantime, and can wait two weeks for practically free rulers, $6/yard fabric, and $24 layer cakes.
Their YouTube channel is also a must for any quilter. I have made multiple quilts from simply watching the tutorials (and not even needing to buy the pattern).
Hancock’s of Paducah
Speaking of great sales, this online shop has them all organized right on their home page. Everything from $4.99 to $7.99 yardage, as well as kits and precuts. They stock most of the designer brands like Moda, Marcus Fabrics, Windham, Wilmington, Free Spirit etc.. If you are looking for yardage for a backing, borders, binding, or home decor, the selection is huge. I think it’s fun to browse through and pick out coordinating fabrics for 3-yard quilt patterns.
The website isn’t fancy, but the sales make up for it. Shipping is free for orders over $100. They usually take about a week to arrive.
Shabby Fabrics
I found this shop by watching their YouTube tutorials, and fell in love with their cozy farmhouse aesthetic. Shabby Fabrics is located in Post Falls, Idaho. They have really unique and timeless quilt kits that I don’t see anywhere else. If you like vintage reproduction, 1930’s, feminine, cozy, floral fabrics this is the shop for you. They also have a really great sale section with kits, precuts, and yardage. Packages are beautifully wrapped and shipped very quickly. Shipping is also free for US orders over $75.
Another great thing about Shabby Fabrics is they do offer Pre-orders for upcoming fabric collections. I find it really fun and inspiring to browse through this section, and see what is coming soon. And if you want to reserve fabric, they just have a small reservation fee, then automatically charge you when the fabric arrives in their shop. Some of the fabric lines are a year out from being released, so this is a great way to send your future self a gift. I have one fabric line already in mind for next year!
Connecting Threads
There are a couple things that I really love about Connecting Threads:
- they have a published catalog they send to your mailbox every quarter, which is always a delight.
- they have their own brand of beautiful fabric and thread.
Thread is something quilters use a LOT of. Most quilters will use very expensive brands like Aurifil, but I have found the Connecting Threads brand of thread to be very very similar in look and quality for a much better price. They have so many colors, and often have sales, as well. Definitely sign up for their email list, and keep an eye out for thread sales!
Connecting Threads also has their own brand of fabric, and regularly comes out with new lines. I find the quality is really nice. Prices are less than the designer brands, too. Look in the sale section for even better deals.
They also have a really extensive catalog of patterns, and truly stunning quilt kits. Their designers know how to pair colors together!
Free shipping on orders over $75.
Fat Quarter Shop
Like Missouri Star Quilt Co., Fat Quarter Shop has led the quilting world forward into the 21st Century. Based in Texas, this online shop has a great YouTube Channel, and beautiful website. They have a daily flash sale, and weekly sales. Shipping is super fast, and free for orders over $80. They also have a great “coming soon” section where you can reserve upcoming fabric lines.
The website is really fun and easy to navigate, and I would say has the best user experience. Some well-known fabric and pattern designers also partner with this shop, and they have great patterns and resources to learn new skills.
That wraps up my list of the five best online quilting fabric shops! I hope this was helpful in deciding where to shop, and maybe gave you some new ideas and inspiration!
