How to Choose Dishware for Your Home

When choosing the everyday dishware for your home, it’s important to choose something that will last and also be easily replaceable if there are accidents. We’ve all experienced having dishes break, and the frustration of not being able to find matching replacements. The result is a cupboard full of mismatched plates and bowls that we eventually donate so we can buy yet another set of pristine matching dishes. The solution: Restaurant ware. What is restaurant ware, and why should you choose it? Where do you buy it? These are questions I will answer. And believe me, this will dramatically change your relationship with your kitchen cupboards.
Restaurant ware: Dishware designed to be used… a lot!
The name speaks for itself. These are dishes used in restaurants and hotels (also known as “hotel ware”). They are made of vitrified ceramic, and designed to be incredibly strong. These dishes are used and washed over and over in a single day. Their shape is usually such that they can be easily stacked, held onto, and resistant to breakage (no sharp corners!). They also have a very simple and classic design. The same dishes are used across a variety of businesses, and never go out of style. You’ve probably seen them at many different restaurants, cafes and thrift stores, and never thought much about them. I certainly didn’t for many many years!
Can I Use Restaurant Ware In My Busy and Chaotic Home?
The obvious answer is YES! In fact, they are the best option for most households. If they can withstand a restaurant, surely the can withstand my family. But many people don’t know about this. Plus, marketing is constantly steering us to purchase the latest set of dishware at Target or Walmart. And the important thing most of us don’t think about is what happens when we break a dish? Most likely, that set is no longer available or trendy. And even if it were, you have to buy the entire set, not just one or two pieces. If you choose restaurant ware, you will be able to easily replace broken dishes. Their design is timeless, and does not change with the trends. So, the question shouldn’t be CAN I use restaurant ware in my home, but rather, WHY aren’t I?

The Pros of Using Restaurant Ware
- They are stronger than regular tableware. Made of vitrified ceramic, and designed to resist breakage.
- Single broken dishes can be replaced. Your dishes will always match!
- They have a classic and timeless design. You won’t be swayed by the latest trends.
- Save money. You won’t ever have to buy another new set of dishes.
Cons of Restaurant Ware
The only con is that you may not have the newest and most trendy tableware. But I think that is something most of us grow out of anyway, as we begin to establish our home and family.
Next week I will talk about where to buy restaurant ware, and also a little post about vintage restaurant ware, which is what I chose as the everyday dishware for my home! I hope this post helped you in deciding what dishware to choose for your own home.
